To the Temple Community, This morning, just before 1:30 a.m., police officers from Temple University and Philadelphia Police departments responded to reports of an off-campus shooting on the 2000 block of North 18th Street. Upon arrival, they found a man who had been shot in the rear yard of a residence. The victim, who does not have an affiliation to the university, was quickly transported to Temple University Hospital by Philadelphia Police, where his condition is unknown at this time. The investigation is being led by the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD). Anyone with information is urged to contact the PPD tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477). You can also contact Temple’s Investigations Unit at 215-204-6200 or Temple Police at 215-204-1234. While this did not involve members of the Temple community, incidents like this can be unsettling. We encourage all students, faculty and staff to become familiar with the university’s available safety resources, including the Walking Escort Program, Flight shuttle service and TUSafe app. Information on them can be found at safety.temple.edu. Sincerely, Denise Wilhelm Interim Vice President for Public Safety and Chief of Police

Message elements

How the first alert is built

To check this alert, SuperGrok Heavy 4.5 (an AI) read it in full 25 separate times, independently. Each read decided whether the message answers each of the six questions and gave a short reason. A final reviewer then weighed all 25 and wrote the plain-English verdict you see when you open a row. The score (for example 22/25) is how many reads agreed; the 25 individual reads are tucked underneath if you want to check them.

TUalertEMER: Shooting reported on the 2000 block of N. 18th Street. Avoid the area. Police are responding.

  • Sourcepresent25/25

    Final assessment

All 25 reads find Source present because the branded TUalertEMER tag identifies the sender.

  • Locationpresent25/25

    Final assessment

All 25 reads find Location present on the 2000 block of N. 18th Street.

Where the threat is. Saying whether danger is in a specific building, a part of campus, or area-wide lets people judge their own proximity and choose a safe direction. Without a where, a warning is hard to act on precisely.

The protective action to take. A clear, specific instruction, such as shelter in place, evacuate, avoid the area, or run-hide-fight, drives faster and more correct protective behavior than describing the threat alone.

    Final assessment

All 25 reads find Time absent: no clock time, date, or recency cue such as now appears.

  • Impactabsent0/25

    Final assessment

All 25 reads find Impact absent: a shooting is named without a stated consequence or severity.

What the hazard could do to the people in its path. Beyond naming the threat, a complete warning conveys its potential consequences or severity, such as that a tornado can level buildings or that a leak could be explosive, so recipients grasp how much danger they are in. Research on warning message content finds that a concrete impact statement helps people personalize their risk and act sooner.

    See all 25 individual reads

    2. absent: Shooting is named but the text never states consequences or severity such as dangerous or life threatening.
