While New York City is an exciting place to explore, it's always a good idea to keep a few safety habits in mind.\nHere are a few simple ways to help keep yourself, and your jewelry, safe:\n Keep your head up. Stay aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions when walking.\n Avoid distractions. Staying alert helps you notice what's happening around you.\n Keep valuables low-key. If you're wearing a chain or necklace, consider tucking it under your shirt while you're outside. It's much harder for\nsomeone to grab what they can't see.\n Travel with friends when possible. There's always safety in numbers.\n Stick to well-lit, busy streets. Choose routes with more people and activity whenever you can.\n Trust your instincts. If something doesn't feel right, change direction, head into a nearby business, or move to a place where other people are\npresent.\nA little awareness goes a long way. Stay safe, look out for one another, and enjoy everything our city has to offer!\nFor more crime prevention tips, please visit https://publicsafety.columbia.edu/crimepreventiontips.",
